Analyzing Documents

Photo Analysisms. Schroll

Throughout my Photo Analysis Unit, students write three analyses of individual photos. They brainstorm and draft the first two as a class, and they completely the second independently. Although I share my chosen structure for an analysis and conference with students, I don’t grade the final product. Students improve their structure. The photos to the left are all from Pondicherry, India which is one of the main settings in Life of Pi. Your task today is to analyze one photo from each category and then draw some conclusions. 'A picture is worth a thousand words.' - Unknown Though the origin of this popular adage is unclear, one thing is clear: using photos with English-Language Learners (ELLs) can be enormously effective in helping them learn far more than a thousand words - and how to use them.

Classes
In this activity, students will go through the process of document analysis to better understand a photograph taken by Lewis Hine, when he was an investigative photographer for the National Child Labor Committee. After analyzing the photograph, they will try to explain how the scene shown in the photograph impacted Hine, and what impression or message he was trying to convey to those who would see his photo.
